
After the combustible dust explosion at the Imperial Sugar plant in Georgia and the plant in Gramercy, Louisiana, the
UFCW and the
Teamsters called on OSHA to issue an emergency standard on combustible dust. They filed a
petition with the U.S. Department of Labor demanding that OSHA follow recommendations of the
Chemical Safety Board but,
OSHA neglected to enforce the standards and follow the recommendations which could have prevented these types of tragedies and other combustible dust explosions.
